This evergreen history article uses authoritative archives and official records. Exact dates are used when documented; gradual inventions and rollouts are described as periods rather than being assigned a misleading single birthday.
Quick facts
- Telegram for iOS launched on August 14, 2013, followed by an official Android alpha in October 2013.
- Pavel Durov provided the product and financial vision, while Nikolai Durov designed key technical foundations including the MTProto protocol.
- Telegram separated cloud chats, which synchronize across devices, from optional device-specific secret chats with end-to-end encryption.
- Groups, broadcast channels, bots and mini apps transformed Telegram from a messenger into a communication platform.
- The service’s privacy claims, public-channel moderation and use during political conflicts have generated continuing controversy.
The Durov brothers after VK
Pavel and Nikolai Durov were previously associated with VK, a major Russian social network. Political and ownership conflicts surrounding VK contributed to Pavel’s departure and strengthened his interest in a communication system designed to resist outside pressure.
Nikolai brought mathematical and engineering expertise. The brothers developed Telegram as a fast, distributed and cross-platform messenger funded for much of its early history by Pavel.
The 2013 launch
Telegram launched for iOS in August 2013 and for Android in October. It emphasized speed, cloud synchronization and the ability to use the same account on many phones, tablets and computers.
This architecture differed from messengers that originally depended heavily on one primary phone. Telegram stored ordinary cloud chats on its infrastructure so users could access complete conversation history from multiple devices.
Cloud chats and secret chats
Telegram uses server-client encryption for cloud chats and offers separate secret chats with end-to-end encryption. Secret chats are tied to specific devices and can include self-destructing messages.
The distinction has often confused users who assume every Telegram conversation is end-to-end encrypted by default. Security researchers have also debated the custom MTProto protocol and Telegram’s design choices.
Groups, channels and public communication
Telegram expanded group size and introduced channels for broadcasting to large audiences. Channels became influential for news, education, fandom, business, activism and political communication.
Public scale also brought abuse. Scams, piracy, violent propaganda and misinformation forced Telegram to develop reporting, moderation and legal-response systems while defending its identity as a privacy-focused platform.
Bots, APIs and mini apps
An open API allowed independent developers to build clients and tools. The Bot API supported automation, customer service, games, payments and community management.
Mini apps later allowed richer web experiences inside Telegram. This moved the service closer to a platform where users could communicate, consume content and interact with services without leaving the app.
Monetization through sponsored messages and Premium
Telegram avoided traditional targeted advertising in private chats. As infrastructure costs grew, it introduced sponsored messages in certain public channels in 2021 and the Telegram Premium subscription in 2022.
Premium offered higher limits and additional features while allowing the core messenger to remain available without a subscription.
Telegram at global scale
Telegram moved its operational base through several countries and established its development team in Dubai. The service grew into one of the world’s largest messaging platforms, with communication ranging from private family chats to enormous public broadcasts.
Its future will continue to depend on a difficult balance: protecting private communication while responding to illegal activity and the political demands of many jurisdictions.
